However, the tradition of manufacturing handmade porcelain originates from China and to begin with the interest in Europe for china was not overwhelming at all. One explanation was the very high prices of china, prices that the man in the street under no circumstances could afford. Therefore, it was mainly royal families in Europe that bought the china. Today, the picture has changed. Now almost any family has a piece of china in their home – but still the china has not lost its symbolic status of wealth. Handmade glass blown by mouth is another popular form of artistic glassmaking. The process of transforming the glowing hot, fluid, substance of glass into beautiful art objects is a handicraft that has attracted many independent artists. Therefore a number of small, exiting workshops have flourished through the years. However, serial productions of the handmade objects are also conducted e.g. by the Danish glass design company Holmegaard.
