The manufacturing of tanned hides and skins is a complicated process. It often involves environmental damaging chemicals, and therefore the manufactures are under constant pressure to develop new and better ways to tan skins. Especially the automotive industry buys a large amount of hides and skins, which they use for leather covers of seats in cars. The car manufacturers are very particular about their choices of hides and skins. When they look for a supplier one of the most important criterions they choose from is the tannery’s policy on environmental issues. One of the polluting chemicals that have existed for years is chrome. Now new techniques developed by the Swedish company Elmo Leather has made it possible to tan hides and skins without the use of chrome. This is a big step in the right direction and the company immediately has experienced an increased demand for their products.
